Fortunately, Sherman was adopted by Mr. Peabody to be his own personal boy. Fortunate, because Mr. Peabody knows all the answers to "How come?" To amuse and educate Sherman, and to get him out of the apartment and off the furniture, Mr. Peabody built the Wabac Machine. The rest of Sherman's story is history -improbable history, but history, nevertheless.
